Abstract
PURPOSE: To readily produce a graft-modified starch paste solution having enhanced water solubility, which is useful as a coating agent or the like, by adding an alkali metal salt to a graft-modified starch having hydrolyzable graft side chains and carrying out simultaneously preparation and saponification of the paste solution.
CONSTITUTION: A graft-modified starch having hydrolyzable graft side chains is prepared by graft-polymerizing a starch, such as corn starch or wheat starch, with a monomer such as vinyl acetate, acrylamide, butyl (meth)acrylate or hydroxyethyl (meth)acrylate at a degree of grafting of 0.1W100%. Subsequently, the graft-modified starch is saponified with an alkali metal salt, such as NaOH, KOH or LiOH, and, after saponification, the excess alkali metal salt is neutralized preferably with an aromatic monobasic or dibasic acid, such as benzoic acid or phthalic acid, yielding a water-soluble graft-modified starch paste solution which is proof against putrefaction.
