Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce an epoxy resin having excellent heat resistance, water resistance and flexibility, by reacting a monohydric phenol with a novolak type epoxy resin.
CONSTITUTION: A monohydric phenol is reacted with a novolak type epoxy resin, optionally in the presence of a catalyst. Monohydric phenols which can be applicable are those which are unsubstituted or substituted by alkyl, allyl, alkenyl, aryl, alkoxy or halogen. Examples of the monohydric alcohol include phenol, cresol, xylenol, trimethylphenol and methoxyphenol. As the novolak type epoxy resin, a phenol novolak type epoxy resin or a cresol novolak type epoxy resin is preferred. The reaction of the monohydric phenol with the novolak type spoxy resin can be fully effected in the absence of a catalyst, but the reaction can be more efficiently carried out in the presence of a catalyst, such as a caustic alkali or tert. amine.
