Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the modulation speed by shaping the distribution of intensity of diffracted light to the angle of incident light in a rectangular form, by forming the electrodes of electro-acoustic transducer so that the width of electrodes may vary along the light transmission direction.
CONSTITUTION: An electro-acoustic transducer 2 made of piezo-electric crystal plate such as lithium niobate crystal is adhered on an acousto-optical medium 1, and the contour of electrodes 6a to 6c on the upper surface thereof is formed in sinx function. And an electrode 7 on the lower surface is divided and lead wires are connected so that the phase of the voltage applied to the electrode 6b may be inverted with respect to that of the voltage applied to adjoining electrodes 6a to 6c. As a result, the distribution of excitation of sound wave due to the electro-acoustic transducer 2 is formed in sinx/x function, so that the angular characteristic of diffracted light 4 transmitted beneath the central axis of the elctrode pattern and diffracted by sound wave may have a rectangular form. Therefore, by confining the incident light 3, the modulation speed may be accelerated.
