Abstract

PURPOSE: To increase the modulation speed by shaping the incident angle characteristic of diffracted light intensity in a trapezoidal form, by applying voltage to a plurality of electrodes of a piezo-electric transducer adhered to an acousto-optical medium so that the voltage may distribute in the light trasmission direction.
CONSTITUTION: An electro-acoustic transducer 32 made of a piezo-electric crystal plate such as lithium niobate crystal is adhered to an acousto-optical medium 31, and the lower electrode 33 thereof is divided into electrode pieces 33a, 33b, 33c. A driving voltage is directly appoied to the electrode piece 33a, and voltage with inverted phase is applied to the electrode pieces 33b, 33c through capacities 36, 37. Therefore, the distribution of excitation of sound wave due to electro-acoustic transducer 32 forms a sinx function, and the angular characteristic of diffracted light transmitted beneath the central axis of electrode pattern and diffracted by sound wave forms a rectangular shape. Hence, an incident light having a large spreading angle is allowed to enter, and the modulation speed may be increased.
