Abstract
PURPOSE: To detect an oblique crack in a seamless pipe by a method wherein a supersonic wave beam is slanted in a plane parallel to the pipe axis including the direction of the incident beam so that it falls on an oblique crack at right angles to it.
CONSTITUTION: By deflecting probe 3, the supersonic wave beam is deflected in a circumferential direction of the pipe. Further, by deflecting probe 3 by an angle α in a plane parallel to the pipe axis including the direction of the incident beam, the beam is caused to fall on oblique crack 2 nearly at right angles to it. The angle α is set at 5° to 20°. At the time of inspection, seamless pipe 1 in water 4 is transported in the longitudinal direction while it is being rotated. Head 8 of probe 3 is fitted to arm 9, which is fitted to a holding plate. and the horizontal distance y between probe 3 and seamless pipe 1 is adjusted. At the same time, the amount of deflection x of probe 3 and the angle α are adjusted. These adjustments are performed by micrometer screws 10, 14 and 17.
