Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare an ethylcarboxymethylcellulose useful as an enteric coating material, etc., by dispersing a powdery cellulose having a specific carboxymethyl substitution degree in a hydrocarbon, etc., adding thereto water and a solvent miscible with both water and the organic solvent, and ethylating the cellulose.
CONSTITUTION: A powdery sodium carboxymethylcellulose having a carboxymethyl substitution degree of 0.4W1.2 is dispersed in a solvent immiscible with water at an arbitrary ratio, preferably in a hydrocarbon (e.g. toluene). A mixture of water with the second solvent (e.g. methanol etc.) freely miscible with both water and the solvent immiscible with water at an arbitrary ratio, is added to the dispersion. The mixture is reacted with an alkali and an ethyl halide (e.g. ethyl chloride) to give an ethylcarboxymethylcellulose having an ethoxyl substitution degree of 1.5W2.5 and improved solubility in solvents.
EFFECT: A wide variety of solvents, such as anhydrous organic solvents, can be used for the preparation of pharmaceuticals.
