Abstract

PURPOSE: Polyethylene terephthalate fiber for reinforcing rubber that has low intrinsic viscosity, specified long period interval and optical birefringence, thus being extremely stable in rubber.
CONSTITUTION: A polyethylene terephthalate of 0.50W0.63 intrinsic viscosity or a polyester mainly containing the same, preferably polyethylene terephthalate copolymer containing 0.05W1mol% of a compound bearing 3 or more ester-forming groups such as trimellitic acid, is made into fibers with a long period interval of 120W150Å and optical birefringence of over 200×10-3. For example, the resulting PET fibers are made into raw cords and fabrics. The fabrics are dip treated at elevated temperatures over 200W220°C and applied into rubber to increase remarkably the heat dimensional stability.
