Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a filament yarn suitable for knitted and woven fabrics having improved hand and a slight decrease in yarn strength after alkali treatment, by drawing an undrawn polyester filament yarn having a specific birefringence under specified conditions to provide thick and thin parts.
CONSTITUTION: An undrawn polyester filament yarn comprising 70% or more of polyethylene terephthalate having a birefringence of 0.025W0.08, preferably 0.03W 0.07, is drawn at a draw ratio below the natural one (N), preferably not less than [1+0.05(N-1)] but not higher than [1+0.95(N-1)], and at a temperature below the second-order transition point, preferably by the draw pin method, and then treated with an alkali.
