Abstract

PURPOSE: To accurately measure the thickness of a slag layer on a molten metal by using a measuring apparatus consisting of a one-end-closed cylindrical body, and a molten slag detection electrode, a fine differential pressure gauge and a thermocouple which are provided in the mentioned cylindrical body.
CONSTITUTION: An insulating tube 7 to which a molten slag detection electrode 2 is connected is provided in a one-end-closed cylindrical body 1. The electrode 2 is connected to an electrode contact 11 of an insulating body 10 provided on a junction body which is joined to the cylindrical body 1 via a packing 5. The junction body is further joined to a base cylinder 12 which is provided therein with a fine differential pressure gauge 3 and a thermocouple 4. All of the electrode 2, fine differential pressure gauge 3 and thermocouple 4 are connected to an arithmetic processor 14 to which a display unit 15 is connected. When this measuring apparatus is inserted into a layer A of molten slag formed on a layer B of molten metal, the electrode 2 comes into contact with the layer A and an electric current starts flowing. When the apparatus is further inserted so that the electrode 2 reaches an interface between the layers A, B, discontinuous changes occur in the electric current. These changes in the electric cuttent as well as the pressure and temperature are continuously measured. Thus, the thickness of the slag can be accurately determined.
