Abstract

PURPOSE: The captioned silica sand for casting molds which is so arranged as to be able to prevent veining effectively by forming carbide films on particle surfaces.
CONSTITUTION: Liquid-form carbohydrate such as saccharides is added to silica sand the mixture is sufficiently kneaded to form an even film of carbohydrate on the particle surfaces. Next, this is dehydration-fired at temperatures of 400 to 600°C in a non-oxidative atmosphere, whereby the carbide film firmly bound to the particle surfaces is formed. Even if the thermal expansion of this silica sand is large, its covering material becomes tar at hich temperatures and absorbs expansion and therefore scabbing or veining does not occur and burns may be prevented as well.
