Abstract

PURPOSE: To oxidize ethylene into ethylene oxide with a high oxygen conversion, high ethylene oxide selectivity, and a long life of a catalyst, by using a silver catalyst supported on a specific non-acid carrier.
CONSTITUTION: Ethylene is oxidized in the presence of a silver catalyst on a specific non-acid carrier comprising 99wt% or more of the total alumina, silica, and titania, and 0.1wt% or less of metals of groups Va, VIa, VIIa, VIII, Ib and IIb in the periodic table as the total metallic oxides, having a large surface area of 0.5W10m2/g, without assuming an acid color by Methyl Red of pKa +4.8, to give ethylene oxide. 1W25wt% of siliver is supported on the carrier. The carrier can be made non-acid by calcining a high-purity substance at a high temperature.
