Abstract
NEW MATERIAL:5-Benzoylphthalonic acid or its derivatives (ϕ-form) of formula I (R is H, lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: Methyl 5-benzoylphthalonate of formula II; mp, 176W178.5°C, the infrared spectrum is given as the chart.
USE: A bactericidal agent for Helminthosporium leaf spot of rice plant. Surface active agent. Intermediates of drugs.
PREPARATION: A Pseudomonas bacterium producing 5-benzoylphthalonic acid, such as Pseudomonus SG 9611 (FERM-4469), is cultured in an enriched medium containing biphenyl, a by-product produced in large quantities on petroleum refining, as the sole or major carbon source through shaking culture or submerged culture with aeration process. The 5-benzoylphthalonic acid accumulated is separated and purified. Further, it is esterified with diazomethane to give the methyl ester.
