Abstract
PURPOSE:To obtain a display device highly reliable without an error operation of scanning, by providing the third electrodes, which must be said a grid electrode, in discharge cells. CONSTITUTION:The construction is such that discharge cells 13 formed at the intersecting points between anodes 10 and cathodes 11 are divided into two of internal regions 13a and 13b, and the regions 13a are used as the region for pilot discharges to be continuously shifted along the anodes 10 while the regions 13b used as the region for display discharges to be generated. To suppress a leak of light due to the pilot discharge in the regions 13a, between the regions 13a and 13b, dielectric layers 15 are provided on the cathodes 11 along the anodes 10. The third electrodes 16 of simple construction for controlling the operation of discharge are provided in the discharge cells 13 along on said dielectric layers 15. The adjustment of applied voltage to said the third electrodes 16 can suppress unnecessary pilot discharges, limit the expansion of the discharges generated in the regions 13a to the display regions 13b and cause display lights stably emitted only from desired discharge cells.
