Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a styrene polymer useful for electrical appliances, etc. and having a weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight ratios higher than a specific value, a specific molecular weight distribution, wherein the amounts of the both low molecular weight portion and high molecular weight are large, and improved moldability, heat resistance, stiffness, impact resistance, etc.
CONSTITUTION: Pure water and additives, e.g. a surface active agent, etc., are fed into a polymerization vessel and stirred. Styrene and a radical polymerization initiator are fed thereto and the vessel is closed. The temperature is raised to 103°C to carry out the polymerization. The temperature is further raised to 125°C to complete the polymerization and the desired polymer having a weight average molecular weight/number average molecular weight ratio of >3.0 and comprising (A) 65W80wt% of a portion having a molecular weight range of 50,000W800,000 and exhibiting a molecular weight distribution curve measured by GPC, of the trapezoid 1, and (B) ≥15wt% of a portion having a molecular weight range of ≥400,000, is obtained. The curve (a) exhibits a heat-resistant type polystyrene containing smaller amount of the high molecular weight portion and having a lowered strength, and the curve (b) exhibits an impact-resistant type polystyrene containing smaller of the low molecular weight portion and having lowered moldability.
