Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the ingot free from any surface flaws such as cracks by letting the molten ingot of high-melting point metals, active metals or their alloys be the anode side and enabling its reciprocating motion while letting the same rotate.
CONSTITUTION: When only the surface of the ingot is dcontinuously melted by plasma electron beams, refining action acts, and the smooth surface free from any surface flaws such as cracks is obtained. Optimun conditions of the atmosphere, flow rate, etc. of the plasma electron beams used are cathode; tantalumn, 8ϕ×0.5mm thick×55mmlong, atmosphere; argon atomsphere, 2.5×10-3 torr, flow rate; argon, 250 lusec. The distance between the cathode and ingot is made about 13mm.
