EXAMPLE: Geometrically isomeric 2-hydroxy-5, 5, 8, 8-tetramethyl-decalin.
USE: It has musk, amber, woody and camphor-perfume and useful as an agent for importing lasting perfume, a modifier, or their intermediates used in various fields including table luxuries, cosmetics, etc.,
PREPARATION: The desired compound V is prepared by (1) reducing a compound II with hydrogen in the presence a reducing catalyst, (2) oxidizing the resulting compound III with an oxidant to afford the compound IV, and (3) reacting the compound IV with a methylmagnesium halide.
