Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a phenolic resin having improved flexural strength and stability, by using a high polymeric phenolic compound obtained by treating a bisphenol- A-containing by-product in the presence of an alkaline catalyst, as a raw material of the resin.
CONSTITUTION: Phenol and acetone are subjected to the dehydration condensation inthe presence of an acidic catalyst to obtain a reaction mixture containing bisphenol A, from whichlthe bisphenol A is separated by distillation, recrystallization with an organic solvent or water, etc., leaving a purification residue containing by-produced dihydroxydiphenylpropane isomer, coumarone compound, etc., and a small amount of bisphenol A. The purification residue is heated at ≥150°C, pref. 180W250°C in the presence of a basic catalyst, the low-boiling point components are removed from the system, and the remaining high polymeric phenolic compound is used as a phenolic component inthe preparation of a phenolic resin.
