Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance in high yield without pulverizing a catalyst, by bringing a glycol into contact with an olefin in the presence of the catalyst and a specific nonionic surfactant under mild conditions of a low temperature and a low agitation speed.
CONSTITUTION: A glycol of formula I: (R is 2W32C, preperably 2W8C, alkylene group; n is an integer 1W10), e.g. ethylene glycol, is reacted with an olefin in the presence of a strongly acidic cation exchange resin, e.g. styrenesulfonic acid-type ion exchange resin, and a nonionic surfactant, preferably at 0W120°C, more preferably 20W100°C, to give the title compound. Polyoxyethylene oleyl ether or lauryl ether may be cited as the surfactant, and its amount is 0.3W10wt.%, preferably 0.5W5 wt.%, based on the raw material.
