Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance useful as water and oil repellents, surfactants, release agents, and intermediates for other substances, in a simple process in high yield, by reacting a polyfluorohalide with a halosulfonic acid, and by hydrolyzing the resulting intermediate.
CONSTITUTION: A compound of formula I or II: (Rf is 2W23C perfluoroalkyl group; Rf' is mC perfluoroalkyl group; X is Br or I; m is an integer 1W21; n is an integer 2W22; m+n is an integer 3W23) is reacted with a compound of the formula YSO3H (Y is F or Cl) at 20W60°C to give an intermediate of formula III or IV which is hydrolized at 70W90°C to form the objective compound of formula V or VI. The halosulfonic acid must be used in excess, preferably 1.5W3.0 moles per mole of the compound of formula I or II. The amount of water in the hydrolysis is preferably 20W150 moles per mole of the intermediate.
