Abstract
PURPOSE: A vinyl chloride-vinyl ester copolymer is saponified to a prescribed level and purified to produce saed saponified product of vinyl chloride copolymer that is suitably used as a binder resin for magnetic tapes.
CONSTITUTION: One hundred parts by wt of a compolyer of 200W800 average polymerization degree that is composed of 50W80 wt% of venyl chloride, 20W40 wt% of vinyl ester and 0W15 wt% of other monomers is dissolved in about 50W200 parts of an alcohol and saponified using about 2W5 parts of hydrochloric acid as a catalyst at about 40W60°C until the absorption ratio of OH/CH in infrared spectrum exceeds 0.5. Then, the saponified product is decolorized with a halogen gas or organic peroixde and the remaining acid is neutralized. The resin part is extracted in the form of solution or powder and dried to less than 3% alcohol content to give said coating resin.
