Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare a coating resin having excellent comtibility with thermosetting resins and solubility in organic solvents, and useful as a binder resin of magnetic recording tape, by dissolving a vinyl chloride-vinyl ester copolymer in a solvent, and saponifying the copolyme to attain a specific IR absorption spectrum.
CONSTITUTION: A vinyl chloride copolymer composed of 50W80wt% of vinyl chloride, 20W40wt% of a vinyl ester (e.g. vinyl acetate), and 0W15wt% of other monomer copolymerizable with vinyl chloride, and having an average polymerization degree of 200W800, is saponified to obtain a resin having an IR absorption spectrum wherein the ratio of the OH absorption peak (3450 cm-1) to the CH absorption peak (2930 cm-1) is ≥0.5; and the resin is neutralized and decolored to obtain the objective coating resin. The saponification is conducted by dissolving the vinyl chloride copolymer (100 parts by weight)into methanol, etc. (50W200 patts), and heating the solution at 40W60°C for about 50 hours in the presence of HCI catalyst. The decoloration is usually carried out by introducing C12 gas into the solution of the saponified polymer, however, treatment with an organic peroxide is also acceptable
