PURPOSE:To accurately control the relative position of the tape and head with the detection signal, by receiving the reflection light or transmitted light corresponding to the relative position of magnetic tape in contact with the magnetic head through the transmitted member at the photo receiving means placed in the head. CONSTITUTION:The recording/reproducing winding 3 is wound on the two sets of head cores 1 and 2 via the shield plate 7, and the transmitted sections 4, 5, 6 consisting of glass and the photo reception elements 8... at the end surface of the sections are placed near the gap. At recording/reproduction, whtn this magnetic tape 17 is in contact with the magnetic head, if the tape is shifted up and down the head cores 1 and 2, the amount of light received and detected is changed at the photo reception elements 8... via the transmitted members 4 and 6 from external light source not shown. This dedetection signal controls the shift of height direction of the magnetic heads to be corrected, and further, the shift of vertical direction can be corrected with similar method.
