Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the title sequestering agent capable of scavenging heavy metals in waste water, easily, from a low-cost mercaptan produced by the desulfurization of petroleum, by condensing a (co)polymer of an unsaturated carboxylic acid with a mercaptan having a specific functional group.
CONSTITUTION: A sequestering agent comprising a condensation product of (A) a (co)polymer composed of one or more α,β-unsaturated carboxylic acids, and having a molecular weight of 100,000W400,000 [pref. (meth)acylic acid 1W4C alkyl ester] with (B) 1W10 moles, based on 1 mole of the above monomer, of a mercaptan having an OH group, amino group, or carboxyl group, or a mercaptan having a difunctional thiol group. The condensation product is a novel substance, and traps a heavy metal compound by forming a complex.
EFFECT: A trace of heavy metal as low as several mg/l can be easily removed.
