Abstract
PURPOSE: The gas-phase catalytic oxidation of an olefin of 3 or more carbon atoms is carried out in two stage wherein a specific catalyst is used in the fore stage and another catalyst is employed in the latter stage, thus producing unsaturated carboxylic acid directly without separation of the aldehyde, the reaction intermediate.
CONSTITUTION: The fore-stage gas phase oxidation of an olefin having 3 or more carbon atoms on the straight chain part with molecular oxygen is conducted in the presence of a catalyst given by the formula (Q is K, Rb, Cs, etc.; R is P, As, B; X is Ce, Ti, Te, Zn, Ge, Sn, Cr, Al, V, Ag, U, etc.; aWj are the numbers of atoms of Mo, Bi, Fe, Co, Ni, Be, Q, R, X, O; when a is assumed 12, b is 0.1W10, c is 0.5W 40, d, e, i are 0W12, d+e is 0.5W15, f is 0.1W35, g is 0.01W5, h is 0W5) to form the aldehyde. The product gas is consequently subjected to gas-phase catalytic oxidation in the presence of another catalyst to give said unsaturated carboxylic acid.
