Abstract

PURPOSE: Isobutylene is subjected to gas-phase catalytic oxidation in the presence of a specific fore-stage oxidation catalyst to form methacrolein, which is subsequently to gas-phase catalytic oxidation in the presence of another specific oxidation catalyst to produce methacrylic acid in higher yield than in the process directly combining the fore and the latter stage oxidations.
CONSTITUTION: The fore-stage oxidation of isobutylene with molecular oxygen is conducted in the presence of a catalyst that consists of elements selected from Mo, Bi, Fe, O and Co, or Ni, and K-Rb-Cs-Tl an the essential components, and P, As, and B as the optional components. Then, the produced gas, without separation, is subjected to the latter-stage oxidation in the presence of another catalyst consisting of P, Mo and O as the essential components. The reaction temperatures employed in the fore- and latter-stage oxidation is 250W700, preferably 250W550°C and the pressure is 1W10 atmospheric pressure.
