Abstract

PURPOSE: To widen the angle of view, lower driving voltage, achieve diversification of colors and higher contrast and perform color switching of multiple colors by using two twisted nematic elements containing different multichromatic dyes and a polarizing plate.
CONSTITUTION: A polarizing plate 11 is disposed of the front of the first twisted nematic element 12 which sandwiches liquid crystal 16 containing multichromatic dyes in twisted orientation between electrode plates 13, 13', in such a manner that the axis of polarization of said plate becomes parallel to the orientation direction of the liquid crystal 16 on the plane of the plate 13. The second twisted nematic element 14 which sandwiches the liquid crystal 17 containing multichromatic dyes differing from those of the element 12 by electrodes 15, 15' is so disposed behind the element 12 that both orientation directions align. The elements 12, 14 are driven respectively independently by circuits 18, 19. As a result, the absorption colors of the element 12 may be observed when both elements 12, 14 are not applied with voltage and the absorption colors of the element 14 may be observed when the element 12 is applied with voltage and the element 14 is not applied with voltage. When both elements 12, 14 are applied with voltage, absorption by dyes does not take place.
