Abstract

PURPOSE: The title fluid having a high rolling coefficient of friction, viscosity and flash point, obtained by hydrogenating specific easily available inexpensive tolulene and xylene derivatives.
CONSTITUTION: A fluid of the formula (R1 is H or methyl group; R2 is methyl or ethyl group, and not ethyl group when R1 is methyl group), obtained by hydrogenating bis-(α-methylbenzyl)toluene and/or bis-(α-methylbenzyl)xylene. The starting material can be obtained by alkylating toluene and/or xylene, if necessary, 50wt% or less of ethylbenzene with styrene in the presence of sulfuric acid or a solid acid, e.g. silica alumina, as a catalyst to control the styrene conversion at 7W 18%.
