NEW MATERIAL:2,3-Dimethyl-5-acetyl-furan of formula.
USE: Diluent of epoxy resins.
PROCESS: Hydroxyacetone which is a by-product of phenol-manufacturing process, is made to react with an alkali (pref. NaOH, KOH) in a solvent (pref. 10W10000 parts, esp. 20W1000 parts by weight of water based on 1 part of the hydroxyacetone), at a temperature higher than room temperature, pref. at 70W120°C, and pH ≥8, pref. ≥10, pref. for 0.5W24 hours, to afford the compound of the formula.
