Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain alumina fibers usable for refractory heat insulating materials, e.g. mats, felts, and boards, having a high tensile strength at normal temperature, by maintaining an alumina fiber precursor at a specific temperature, and by heat- treating the precursor at a high temperature.
CONSTITUTION: A solution consisting mainly of an alumina compound is spun into an alumina fiber precursor, which is maintained at 700W800°C for 0.5W5hr, preferably 1W3hr. The precursor is then heat-treated at 1,000W1,600°C, preferably 1,200W1,600°C, to give the objective alumina fibers.
