Abstract
PURPOSE: To produce the title fiber with superior heat resistance and heat insulating properties by extraction-removing part of the alkali metal component in a single crystalline fibrous product, with water or acid, made from a molten alkali metal titanate.
CONSTITUTION: Raw materials for an alkali metal titanate M2O.nTiO2 (M; an alkali metal and n; 1W5) made of mixt. of TiO2 and an alkali metal oxide are heated to 800W1300°C to form a melt. The alkali metal titanate may be mixed with M2MoO4 or M2WO4 (M; an alkali metal) as a flux in a molar ratio of 5:95W 50:50. The melt is then slowly cooled to obtain single crystalline fibrous alkali metal titanate, which is treated with water or acid to extract part of the M2O component. Thus, at least the surface of the fibrous product is converted into M2O.6TiO2.nH2O. The fibrous product is further heated to above 500°C to convert at least the surface compsn. into M2O.6TiO2.
