Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for medicines, agricultural chemicals, and compounded perfumes, by oxidizing an alkoxybenzyl alcohol in a basic aqueous medium, in the presence of a specific metal catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An alkoxybenzyl alcohol of formula I (n is 1W3; R is lower alkyl, and may be the same or different when n is 2 or 3 is oxidized with a gas containing morecular oxygen in a basic aqueous medium, e.g. preferably aqueous caustic soda, in the presence of a metal catalyst of the platinum group, e.g. platinum, palladium, or incombination with an inorganic salt of a metal selected from lead, bismuth, silver, and tin, to obtain an alkoxybenzaldehyde of formula II. Although the platinum group catalyst alone provides a high rate of reaction and selectivity, the addition of the inorganic salt mentioned above will give a higher rate and selectivity.
