Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain alkali resistant and water proof emulsifying agent by adding an acid as catalyst to a polyvinyl alcohol resin, and then adding aldehydes to the polyvinyl alcohol resin containing the acid to limit the amount of the polyvinyl alcohol resin.
CONSTITUTION: A polyvinyl alcohol resin having a degree of polymerization of 300W3600 and a saponification equivalent of 80W100% is diluted to produce an aqueous solution. After the addition of an acid to the aqueous solution, aldehydes having the formulae I and II are added to the aqueous solution containing the acid. The resulting mixture is polymerized with stirring to produce an emulsifying agent containing polyvinyl alcohol resin in which 1W30 equivalent % are acetalated by the aldehyde having the formula I and 0W40 equivalent % are acetalated by the aldehyde having the formula II. The reason why the acetalation is limited is that when the acetalation with the aldehyde having the formula I is lower than the limited amount, it is difficult to obtain water proof and alkali resistant agent and when the acetalation is higher than the limited amount, water solubility is unstable. When the acetalation with the aldehyde having the formula II is higher than the limited amount, water solubility is unstable.
