Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain titled compound having improved heat resistance, by adding, to an aqueous polyvinyl alcohol solution, a less than equimolar amount of an unsaturated carboxylic acid compound, carrying out the esterification of the mixture, adding an aldehyde compound to the reaction mixture and carrying out the acetallization.
CONSTITUTION: To an aqueous solution of polyvinyl alcohol, average polymerization degree about 200W3,000, is added a less than equimolar amount, pref., 5W 50mol%, based on polyvinyl alcohol, of an unsaturated carboxylic acid compound such as maleic acid or acrylic acid, and the mixture is esterified at a temperature of about 85W100°C.
