Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare a high purity rosin allyl ester under atmospheric pressure, at a relatively low temperature, by reacting a rosin alkali metal salt with an allyl halide in the presence of a cuprous compound as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: The objective rosin allyl ester is prepared in high yield, by reacting a rosin alkali metal salt with an allyl halide such as allyl chloride, in the presence of (pref. 3W8wt% of) a cuprous compound such as cuprous halide, cuprous (hydr)oxide, pref. at 40W100°C under atmospheric pressure. The reaction is pref. carried out first at about 40°C, and then at about 100°C.
USE: Softening agent, viscosity reducing agent, and cold resistance imparting agent for rubber.
