Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as stabilizers, intermediates for dyes and heat-resistant resins in the yield, by brominating biphenyl with bromine, in a sepcific solvent at ordinary or a little higher temperature and ordinary pressure readily without a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: Biphenyl is reacted with bromine in a solvent of o-dichlorobenzene, nitrobenzene, and compounds of formula RCln(R is 2W5C saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon; n is 1W5), e.g., 1,1- or 1,2-dichloroethane, etc., or formula RNO2 (R' is 1W3C saturated aliphatic hydrocarbon, e.g., nitroethane or nitropropane, having a dielectric constant of 6.5 or higher at ordinary temperature. As the solvent has a high stability and therefore little loss in recycling and reuse, the title compound is obtained economically in high yield.
