Abstract

PURPOSE: To perform foil seam welding in which high temperature cracking is difficult to occur by providing more than a pair of auxiliary roller electrodes of a smaller current supply capacity than that of a pair of main roller electrodes for welding which sandwich the work by way of foils 3 slightly behind said main electrodes.
CONSTITUTION: This foil seam welding device has main roller electrodes 2 which sandwich the work 1 by way of foils 3 and more than a pair of auxiliary roller electrodes 4 of a smaller current supply capacity than that of the electrodes 2 installed slightly behind these. Now, the work 1 is fed in or while it is being drawn in by the main roller electrodes 2, current is supplied to the respective roller electrodes 2, 4. As a result of this, the welding similar to conventional foil seam welding is accomplished at the main electrode 2 portions and at the same time the welding nugget W formed here is heated by the postheating current I' flowed between the electrodes 4 behind these. Hence, rapid cooling of the weld zone is reduced and the occurrence of high temperature cracking may be prevented even with welding of the butt joint of relatively thick steel plates.
