Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain carbon fibers usable for aerospace materials, and structural materials for means of high-speed transportation, by carbonizing flameproofed acrylic fibers under specific conditions, and by heat-treating the fibers in air at a high temperature in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: Acrylic fibers are flameproofed in an oxidizing atmosphere, e.g. air, at 200W300°C, preferably 240W270°C, under a tension of 1W50 mg/d for 0.2W 3hr. The fibers are then calcined in the atmosphere of an inert gas at 1200W1400°C for 0.1W3min to give a shrinkage of 4W8%. The resulting carbon fibers incorporated with 100W500ppm of phosphorus, and heat-treated in air at 470W650°C under conditions to satisfy the formula (T is the heat-treating temperature; t is the treating time) to form the desired fibers.
EFFECT: Phosphorus reduces the variation of strength.
