Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound which is antipyretic, antiphlogistic, analgesic, antispasmodic, etc., in high yield from an alcohol derivative in one step, by using a highly nucleophilic alkanethiol in a mixture of water and an aprotic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: Aromatic acetic acid of formula I, having no α-thio-substituent, is obtained by reacting an easily available alcohol derivative of formula II (Ar is aromatic radical) and an alkanethiol of formula III (R is alkyl) in the presence of a base in a mixture of water and an aprotic polar solvent (e.g. dimethyl sulfoxide, etc.). By using the highly nucleophilic alkanethiol and a polar mixed solvent which can be easily substituted at the mucleus, the mercaptide anion reacts easily to the nucleus of the α-thio-substituted aromatic acetic acid derivatives formed as an intermediate and the compound of formula I is obtained directly in one step.
USE: Chemical modifier of antibiotics, and raw material of pyrethroid insecticide.
