Abstract

PURPOSE: To convert a nitrile directly into the corresponding ester useful as a raw material for fibers and synthetic resins, in a high conversion ratio and selectivity, by reacting it with water and alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising Cu and Si and/or Al and O as essential constituents.
CONSTITUTION: A nitrile is reacted with a mixture of water and an alcohol in the presence of a catalyst comprising Cu and Si and/or Al and O as essential constituents, and beside one or more elements selected from Zn, Ti, Zr, Sn, Pb, V, Sb, Bi, Br, Mo and W, and preferably having the composition of the formula (X is Si and/or Al; Y is one of the above-mentioned elements except the essential constituents;aWd are atomic ratios and when a is 1, b is 0.1W100, e is 0W100, and d is the number corresponding to the oxide formed by the combination of the each constituent mentioned above.), at 100°C or higher, and converted directly into the corresponding ester in a high conversion ratio and selectivity.
