Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A 3-cyano-4-thia-1-azabicyclo[ 3,2,0 ]heptane (a penicillin analog) of formula II (R1W3 are organic or inorganic residues).
EXAMPLE: p-Methoxybenzyl 3-cyano- 3 -methyl- 7 -oxo- 6 -phenylacetamido- 4 -thia- 1-azabicyclo-[3,2,0]heptane-2-carboxylate.
USE: Antibacterial agent and its intermediate.
PROCESS: The compound II is prepared by heating a compound I in an inert solvent such as benzene, at 50W150°C, pref. 70W120°C. The starting compound I can be obtained by (1) reacting a compound III with NaN3 and ICl in a solvent such as CH3NO2 at low temperature, (2) reacting the resulting compound IV with an NaN3- eliminating agent, and (3) heating the compound V thus obtained at room temp. to +70°C in the absence of solvent.
