Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a glucofuranurono-6,3-lactone useful as an intermediate for ascorbic acid industrially advantageously, by reacting a glucofuranose with molecular oxygen in the presence of palladium or platinum as a catalyst in an organic solvent. CONSTITUTION:1,2-O,O-Isopropylidene-alpha-D-glucofuranose of formula I is reacted with molecular oxygen in the presence of palladium or platinum as a catalyst in a solvent, e.g. dioxane, at 20-200 deg.C, preferably 40-110 deg.C. to give 1,2-O,O-isopropylidene-alpha-D-glucofuranurono-6,3-lactone of formula II.
