Abstract
PURPOSE: To electrically control the reflectance of porous material surfaces facing open space by moving the light transmittable liquid material impregnated in the opaque or colored porous material according to the voltage being applied.
CONSTITUTION: Electroosmotic transparent liquid material 140 is impregnated in opaque or colored porous material 130. When DC voltage is applied on the electrode 152 side, the liquid 140 penetrates to the negative electrode 120 side and the impregnation rate of the liquid on the surface of the electrode 152 side facing open space 170 lowers, producing holes 131. Air exists in the holes 131 and refractive indices become uneven. Hence, external light L1 is reflected at their interface, producing reflected light L2. When the voltage is increased, the liquid impregnation rate decreases and the reflected light increases, thus the electrode 152 part is observed white. When the voltage is made zero, the state of the electrode 151, i.e., black, is reset. If, therefore, the electrodes 151, 152 are increased and voltage is selectively applied between them and the electrode 120, then the number display device of the reflection type is constituted.
