Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable light signal input to be surely ON-OFF controlled by disposing a non-linear strip form conductive electrode and linear strip-form conductive electrode in proximity at non-linear portions and applying voltages to both electrodes. CONSTITUTION:A low concentration semiconductor layer 6 whose refractive index changes when applied with voltages is provided on a high concentration semiconductor layer 7. A non-linear strip-form first conductive electrode 4 and a linear-strip form second conductive electrode 5 are disposed thereon so as to approach in the non-linear portions. If with such a constitution a voltage E1 is applied to the electrodes and the semiconductor layers and voltage E2 is not applied, the light guide along the electrode 4 is constituted and according to input light O, output light O1 is obtained but output light O2 is not drawn out. Next, when the voltages E1 and E2 are simultane ously applied, the input light O advances rectilinearly in the light guide portion formed in linear form from the electrode 4 up to 5, thus the output light O2 is obtained and the output light O1 is not obtained.
