For regenerative braking, other thyristor switches 11a, 11b are closed and the former thyristor switches 10a, 10b are opened. At that time, a circuit is composed of a diode 13a, the armature 4a, the switch 11a, the field winding 6b, the smoothing reactor 7b and the chopper 8 and another circuit is composed of a diode 13b, the armature 4b, the switch 11b, the field winding 6a, the smoothing reactor 7a and the chopper 8. The power running is thus changed over to the regenerative braking without using a contact.
