Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare the high purity title compound useful as an intermediate of an oxidation color, economically, in high yield, by reducing 2-amino-5-nitro-4- propylpyridine with hydrogen in a neutral solvent in the presence of a specific alkali-treated catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: 2,5-Dicyano-4-propylpyridine is prepared by reducing 2-amino- 5-nitro-4-propylpyridine with hydrogen in a solvent such as methanol, at 50W90°C, in the presence of a Raney-nickel catalyst obtained by removing aluminum from a Raney-nickel aluminum alloy with an alkali. The pressure of hydrogen is pref. 10W50kg/cm2. The starting nitro compound can be easily obtained by reacting 2- amino-4-propylpyridine with a nitrating agent.
