Abstract

PURPOSE: To separate an optically active D-pantolactone ester of an organic carboxylic acid from L-pantolactone, by hydrolyzing a D,L-pantolactone ester of an organic carboxylic acid in the presence of a specific hydrolase.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrolase produced by microorganisms of the genus Aspergillus, enzyme No.E.C.3.1.1.3, e.g. lipase AP, is made to act on a D,L-pantolactone ester of an organic carboxylic acid in water as a solvent at a pH of 8.5W3.0 and -10W80°C to hydrolyze only the L-isomer. The optically active compound of the formula (R is alkyl or alkenyl group) is then separated from L-pantolactone by distillation.
USE: The hydrolyzed compound of formula is usable as a raw material for food additives and medicines, and L-pantolactone is a material by racemization.
