Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare iminodiacetic acid usable for various purposes, e.g. chelate group introducing bases, raw materials for medicines or pesticides, selectively on an industrial scale, by reacting easily available aminoacetic acid with NaCN or KCN and HCHO.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of aminoacetic acid is reacted with 0.9W1.1 moles each of NaCH or KCN and HCHO at a pH of 9W10 and a temperature of 0W50°C for 10 minW2 hr to give an N-cyanomethyl derivative, which is hydrolyzed with an alkali hydroxide at 90W95°C to form iminodiacetic acid in high yield.
