Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain silver peroxide with low self-discharge properties and high stability as a cell by adding a specified amt. of an oxidizing agent such as AgO or Na2O2 to an aq. soln. of AgNO3 contg. impurities and by filtering precipitates under restricted alkaline conditions.
CONSTITUTION: To an aq. soln. of AgNO3 formed with electrical Ag contg. trace amts. of Fe, Cu, Pb, etc. is added an oxidizing agent such as AgO, Na2O2 or KMnO4 in an amt. above 1.6 times as much as the equivalent wt. required to oxidize dissolved NO2-. Precipitates formed from the soln. at pH8W9 are filtered to obtain a purified aq. soln. of AgNO3. The gas generation rate of AgO obtd. from the soln. is below 85W100 μl/g-AgO.48 hr in a 40% NaOH soln. of 40°C and thus the AgO is superior to usual AgO in stability.
