Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound, a raw material for medicines, pesticides, dyes, and herbicides, selectively in a short time, by reacting a pyridine compound containing β-picoline with chlorine in the gaseous phase in the presence of an inert diluent.
CONSTITUTION: A pyridine compound, e.g. β-picoline or β-dichloropyridine, of the formula (X and Y are H or Cl, n is an integer 0W3, except when X and Y are Cl and n is 3) is reacted with chlorine in the gaseous phase in the presence of an inert diluent, e.g. nitrogen or carbon tetrachloride, to give the title compound industrially advantageously.
