Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a high performance light modulator causing small fluctuations in modulation efficiency with respect to changes in temperature and incident light wavelength, by sequentially changing the ratio of width of electrode digit and spacing between adjacent electrode digits, in at least one part of screen-form electrode.
CONSTITUTION: A lithium tantalate crystal 11 is cut out in the vertical direction to X-axis, and is formed so as to transmit light in the direction of Y-axis. A screen- form electrode 12 having plural electrode digits is placed on the crystal 11, and a uniform electrode 12 is desposed on the entire back side thereof and is earthed. When a voltage is applied to the electrode 12 from a signal generator 13, the electric field in the direction of X-axis is applied to the crystal 11 periodically in the direction of Y-axis. When the ratio of the width of electrode digit and spacing between adjacent electrode digits is varied sequentially in the direction of Y-axis, the width of electric field application in X-axis gradually decreases as further advancing to both end parts of the crystal 11. By gradually decreasing the width of electric field application at the ends of the crystal in this way, fluctuations of the efficiency may be reduced.
